JavaScript Self Function

You are Here:

What is Self Function?

A Self Function is a function that executes a set of statements within it by itself when a javascript control passes through it.

Note: You cannot call self function anywhere within a JavaScript program.

Purpose of Self Function

Self Function is all about variable scoping. Variables declared in the self function are, by default, only available to code within the self function.

This allows code to be written without concern of how variables are named in other blocks of javascript code.

Example

HTML Online Editor
<!DOCTYPE html> <html> <body> <p id="point"></p> <script> var x = document.getElementById("point"); (function(){ var txt = "Hello world"; x.innerText = txt; })(); </script> </body> </html>

Syntax

(function(){ //code block })();
