HTML ISO Country Code (ISO 639-1)
What is ISO Country Code?
International Organization for Standardization(ISO) has published a Standard way for defining countries with Codes in abbreviations.
This ISO Country codes is strictly followed by Google to define which country the corresponding webpage belongs to.
There are different versions of ISO Country codes like ISO 639-1, ISO 639-2/T, ISO 639-2/B, ISO 639-3. But Google strictly recommended to use ISO 639-1.
Where to Specify?
The ISO Country codes should be specified in the current page and the external page linked to the current page using <link>.
How to Specify?
There are 2 attributes that helps you to specify the Country Code of a page. They are
- lang - To specify the Country Code of the current page.
- hreflang - To specify the Country Code of the external page linked to the current page using <link>.
Example
Note: In the above example, en refers to the language code. Whereas CA and AU refer to the Country Code.
It is to be noted that when you have specific url's for English speakers in Australia(en-au), Canada(en-ca) etc. then the Language code should be followed by the Country code.
